During the next week, we officially moved into Kyle’s childhood home, even bringing over several of the horses. Grey’s parents decided they didn’t want the responsibility of boarding horses if their daughter wasn’t going to be there to help. And more importantly, they decided to let Kyle go, which really put a damper on their boarding business.

I knew it was tough for Grey to break those ties, but she’d already started with her time away following the rodeo circuit. Still, it was an emotional time for her and we honored her needing her space.

After contacting all the owners, most of them agreed to move their horses to our place. A couple of them couldn’t because of the distance, but they quickly found other accommodations.

Grey and her dad argued about her move, and her mother cried, but Grey stood strong and wouldn’t relent. She was determined to get her own life going, which I had the feeling her dad admired, but couldn’t admit out loud. Especially since she was moving on the other side of town with three men. He didn’t ask how that arrangement was going to work and Grey didn’t offer the specifics.

For now, that was enough.

I’d located Kyle’s horse, Rocky, and we were working on getting it back. Seemed the new owner lived in Colorado on some dude ranch and Rocky was a perfect ride for older folks and kids. Kyle didn’t know it, but I’d offered double what the rancher had paid for the steed, and it seemed as though he was going to take my offer.

We were getting into a rhythm that we all seemed to like, at least for the daylight hours. Getting the place livable after it had been abandoned for all this time was harder than any of us thought it would be. In my old life, I would have made a few phone calls and in a matter of hours an entire crew would’ve appeared to do all the heavy lifting. The crew would’ve had us up-and-running in a matter of days, but I couldn’t do that. Not if I didn’t want to blow my cover.

Besides, I was really getting into all this physical labor stuff. Whatever I couldn’t figure out on my own, Joel or Kyle taught me, and in a matter of days I knew how to split logs, clean out a stall, feed the horses, groom them, how to fix a fence, and how to poach an egg, courtesy of Kyle who seemed to flourish in the kitchen. Yeah, he liked ranching all right, but he came to life when he was cooking us a meal.

With all the work we had to do inside the barn and the arena, and even the corral needed work, we were dead tired at the end of each day. So tired that nothing else seemed to matter but our beds. Still, it felt good to work together each day, share a great meal, and drop into bed every night.
